Studies in SEO

When you first start your blog, the search engine at MSN might just be your best friend as far as generating early traffic to your site goes. For reasons no one seems to know, MSN often gives new sites a return on their search results. That’s the up side. The down side is that the MSN search isn’t used nearly as much as Google. One of my blogs is a site called Christian Book Club. It has been getting traffic lately from MSN searches. I thought I would use it to demonstrate how the search engines differ, particularly when it comes to new sites. When you do a search for Christian Book Club on MSN the result is on page 1 at position number 4.

Page 1 results will get traffic to your site. That is why you want to see your site show up on page 1 when you do a search for it using keywords that people would use to find your site. A Google search for Christian Book Club shows up on the bottom of page 7 at position number 70.

I also did a search using Yahoo but after searching the first 20 pages of results the site didn’t show up. The site didn’t show up at Ask.com either. The best scenario would be that your site shows up on all the big search engines. Of all of them, however, the most traffic always comes from Google. As you work on your Google rank, be thankful for MSN. I am.
